Port Vale returned to winning ways as goals from Lewis Haldane and Marc Richards proved the undoing of Torquay.
A Richards free-kick late in the opening half fell kindly for Haldane, who sent the loose ball beyond Gulls keeper Michael Poke from 10 yards.
Torquay hit back after the break when substitute Elliot Benyon turned in a ball across goal from Chris Zebroski.
The winner came when Louis Dodds sent a Haldane free-kick back across goal for Richards to fire in from close range.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon:
"We had a lot of chances again today and it's a carbon copy so we have to find a way of getting wins and digging in.
"The performance levels are there, we're in the game all the time and we seem to get sucker-punched.
"Everyone's finding it difficult through this terrible spell, but we've all got to dig in now."
Port Vale manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:
"It was an ugly win, and in terms of performances, you've got to feel slightly disappointed with it, but we've picked up three valuable points.
"We had to grind it out, we went in 1-0 up but we didn't show enough sharpness and our better players were all at the back.
"But after the disappointment of the second half against Chesterfield, we've ground out a result when perhaps we didn't deserve it."
