Crewe chairman wants promotion

Gudjon Thordason
Thordarson hoping to lead Crewe back to League One

Crewe Alexandra chairman John Bowler is targeting promotion back to League One at the first attempt.

"Promotion has to be our aim, we want to quickly put behind us last season," Bowler told BBC Radio Stoke.

The Alex have lost both their opening games of the new season 2-1 and were booed off the pitch against Dagenham and Redbridge last Saturday.

Crewe are playing in League Two for the first time in 15 seasons and have only managed to make two permanent signings.

Bowler is keen for the players to put past disappointments behind them, and remains confident that his manager Gudjon Thordarson is the man to achieve it.

Mr Bowler added: "When we appointed Gudjon we wanted someone who had won promotion before and had a proven track record.

"It was important to us to bring that calibre of man in to be part of the club to hopefully be in the race for promotion. Gudjon has his eyes firmly focussed on this season."

Defender John Brayford is backing Thordarson to get it right and he told BBC Radio Stoke: "We need to banish their nightmare start in League Two with a victory at Grimsby on Saturday.

We put in an improved showing in Tuesday night's Carling Cup tie with Blackpool and now we were looking forward to the start of the season at Blundell Park."
