Martin produced a string of fine saves in Vale's win at Bramall Lane
Port Vale goalkeeper Chris Martin is hoping his performance in the Carling Cup win over Sheffield United will help him cement a first team place.
Martin, 19, has started the season in place of the injured Joe Anyon, who is back in training after suffering a broken leg at Chesterfield in March.
"I'll do the best I can while I'm in there," Martin told BBC Radio Stoke.
"I know Joe will be happy for me. Hopefully he can come back soon so that there's some healthy competition."
Vale boss Micky Adams was full of praise for his young goalkeeper for his performance at Bramall Lane.
"Getting a new goalkeeper is not a major priority for me now having seen him perform on the highest stage," Adams told BBC Radio Stoke.
"He's set his standards, and he's got to keep those standards as high as he can. If he does that, we've got a good goalkeeper on our hands."
Martin made his senior debut in April 2008, in a 6-0 defeat against Swindon Town at the County Ground, and stepped in for Anyon at the tail end of the 2008-09 season following his injury at Saltergate.
Daniel Lloyd-Weston, 17, is the only other fit senior goalkeeper at the club.
