Hurst has scored three goals for Carlisle so far this season
Carlisle winger Kevan Hurst believes consistency is stopping the club from mounting a challenge for promotion in League One this season.
The Blues have beaten high-fliers Norwich and and Charlton but slipped to home defeats by Exeter and Brighton.
"When you look at our results against teams that were relegated and Leeds, there's no-one we can't beat," Hurst told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"It's about the consistency in the results and we're working on that."
Having netted two goals in two games against MK Dons and Norwich at the end of November, the winger revealed he is targeting more.
"I think the second goal is the hardest to get particularly when you've got your first goal so early but now I want to kick on and score as many as I can," he said.
"When I was at Chesterfield I scored eight one season, which is probably the most I've scored in a season, though I've never set myself a target as my target is to provide them, that's what I've always done.
"Goals are a bonus for me, so I'm hoping to get about six or seven, when you score two in successive games you start to get carried away with yourself, but six or seven is about right."
Hurst, who began his career at Sheffield United, joined Carlisle from Scunthorpe United in August 2009 for a fee which could rise to £145,000 and has since made 24 appearances in all competitions.
