Carlisle, 13 places behind opponents Norwich in League One, reached round three of the FA Cup for the first time in eight seasons with a fine display.
A spectacular Vincent Pericard volley, converting Joe Anyinsah's cross, got the Cumbrians up and running.
But after Wes Hoolahan had cut in from the left, Grant Holt equalised.
Kevan Hurst restored Carlisle's lead following fine work from Pericard before Graham Kavanagh's cross was headed home by Richard Keogh.
Norwich manager Paul Lambert told BBC Radio Norfolk:
"We got off to a really poor start, we got ourselves back into it for a spell, but you can't start the way we did in the second half and expect to turn the game.
"All credit to Carlisle, they were better than us on the day.
"If you're in something you may as well try and win every game you can, we've been on a terrific run, we'll just have to build one up and go again."
