Roberts keen to fill Gleeson void at Cambridge United
Roberts is a product of the Chester academy
Cambridge United defender Kevin Roberts hopes to fill the void left by the departure of Dan Gleeson to Blue Square Premier rivals Luton.
Gleeson had been Cambridge's regular right-back since 2007.
Roberts told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've got nothing but good words to say about Gleeson and he could play in the Football League from what I've seen.
"But I'm just my own player. I give 100% in every game and it's stood me in good stead until now."
Roberts, 20, joined the U's from Chester in January and signed a new one-year deal in May.
"I was delighted to sign a contract as since I've come here Martin Ling and Paul Carden have been great with me," he said.
"It's such a big club and I now how far they can go so I didn't really have to think about it."
Roberts can play across the defence and also in midfield, but feels he can become the U's regular right-back.
"I need to go back in pre-season as fit as possible and then work hard in training," he said.
"There's a lot of competition for places in defence, which is healthy, we've just re-signed Brian Saah and Josh Coulson who are both excellent and the new signings look like good additions as well."
