Derry hold discussions with Kenny
Stephen Kenny
Stephen Kenny remains a popular figure at the Brandywell
Derry City officials have held talks with former boss Stephen Kenny about the vacant managerial position at the Brandywell, the BBC understands.

Earlier in the week, Kenny played down suggestions that he could return to the club but this has not put off Candystripes officials.

Derry are refusing to comment on comment on the issue but it's clear that Kenny is the man they want.

John Robertson's contract as Derry boss was terminated on Tuesday evening.

There's little doubt that Kenny is the fans' choice to succeed Robertson and that is also the case with the club's new board.

Despite his departure from the Dunfermline job last week, Kenny publicly stated in the last few days that both he and his family wanted to remain in Scotland.

However, Derry officials will do everything in their power to change the Dubliner's mind.

If Kenny does rule himself out, Finn Harps manager Paul Hegarty, assistant during the Dubliner's Derry reign, could also come into the equation.

After John Robertson's departure on Tuesday, Hegarty said that he was concentrating on his Finn Harps role.

Hegarty guided Harps to the Eircom Premier Division this year after they came through a two leg play-off against Waterford United.

Alan Matthews, who quit the Longford Town job last week, and current Cork City manager Damien Richardson could come into contention for the Derry role if Kenny and Hegarty turn down the job.
