| Saturday, 16 November, 2002, 17:35 GMT Millwall 2-2 Leicester Dennis Wise avenged his sacking by Leicester City with the equaliser against them for Millwall in a dramatic encounter at the New Den. Wise, who is also in the process of suing Leicester, capped a fine display with an 81st minute levelller. The Foxes had stunned Millwall with a two-goal burst in the first three minutes after goals from Matt Heath and Jordan Stewart. But they had Brian Deane sent-off for two bookable offences when he fouled Wise after just 12 minutes. Steven Reid pulled one back for the home team before Wise equalised. Muzzy Izzet had the chance to win the game for the visitors but missed a penalty in injury-time. The match was the first time Wise had faced Callum Davidson, who suffered a fractured cheekbone in an incident on a pre-season tour of Finland which prompted Wise's sacking from the club. Revenge The Scot lasted 32 minutes of the game before being withdrawn after receiving a booking for a foul on Wise. All this came after Millwall had been left shell-shocked by a lightning start from the visitors. First, Izzet's floated free-kick in the first minute allowed Heath to slip in and head the opener from close range. Then Davidson evaded Wise's tackle with a strong run before setting up Stewart for goal number two in the third minute. Leicester striker Deane was booked in the 12th minute for an elbow on Matt Lawrence. He was red-carded within a minute following a two-footed tackle on Wise. By the 24th minute, Millwall boss Mark McGhee decided to throw caution to the wind and brought on Republic of Ireland winger Reid for the first time this season. Reid reduced Millwall's deficit when taking advantage of keeper Ian Walker spilling a shot. Steve Claridge, Paul Ifill and Reid all went close for the home side before Wise's revenge. Substitute Ben May raced to the by-line before picking out the former Wimbledon and Chelsea midfielder arriving late in the box, and he made no mistake with a low drive. Leicester were handed a lifeline when Lawrence fouled substitute Trevor Benjamin, but Izzet failed to convert. Millwall: Warner, Lawrence, Nethercott, Johnson, Ryan, Ifill, Roberts, Wise, Livermore, Harris, Claridge. Subs: Gueret, Reid, Kinet, May, Robinson. Leicester: Walker, Impey, Heath, Sinclair, Rogers, Scowcroft, Izzet, Davidson, Stewart, Deane, Dickov. Subs: Reeves, Benjamin, Stevenson, Wright, Lewis. Referee: S Bennett (Kent). |
