A record Northern Counties Eastleague crowd of 1,082 saw Scarborough come from behind to beat Bridlington 2-1 and replace them at the top of the table.
Nathan Hotte gave Bridlington an early lead, but Dave Hartas equalised eraly in the seond half before Scott Phillips scored the winner from a penalty.
Hartas told BBC Radio York: "We didn't really start well to be honest and we got told so at half time.
"We've been shouted at and we've come out strong and knocked the ball about."
The crowd was the biggest at Bridlington's Queensgate ground since an FA Cup first round tie against York City in the early 1990s attracted close to 1,800.
Hartas added: "[The crowd] is intimidating before the game but we tend to rise to it once we get involved and [once] the game starts we get more confident."
Scarborough play their home games at Queensgate and Hartas added: "It felt weird getting changed in the away changing rooms.
"We've had a lot to do, but that's how we train. We work hard for these games."
Hartas said it was a "massive" boost to beat a team who had two seven-goal hauls and one eight-goal haul to their credit.
"We know if we play football we'll win games. Sometimes we haven't done that this season but now we've just started to get a kick and we can go higher."
The two East Coast rivals do it all again next week - with Athletic occupying the home changing rooms - when they meet in the FA Vase.
"We had a few players missing today so we're going to be even stronger, and we'll be up for it."
