Worcester sign Stafford's Daniel

Blue Square South side Worcester City have signed Stafford Rangers captain Wayne Daniel.

The 32-year-old defender played for Kidderminster Harriers before signing for Stafford in June 2002.

Daniel becomes City's second summer signing following the capture of Team Bath goalkeeper Jake Meredith.

"He's an experienced pro and something we fell short of when we lost people like Jon Richardson," City boss Richard Dryden told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

The Birmingham-born centre-half recently completed his testimonial year as Stafford's longest-serving player.

"We need a bit of guidance at the back and we're looking for one or two players with experience of these leagues and Wayne fits the bill," Dryden added.

The City boss says his squad is likely to be a mix of experienced professionals and young, hungry players looking to make their mark in the game.

"We've brought in Wayne and we've got Tom Kemp and hopefully Mark Clyde if we can get him fit," he said.

"They are three good centre-halves and if you put them alongside the likes of Shabir Khan and Gary Walker they can hopefully guide them on the pitch as well as off it.

"You look at the goalkeeping and defensive situation and we are almost there, so we are now looking for creative midfielders, wingers who are going to deliver crosses and people who will put the ball into the back of the net," he added.

City will again play in Blue Square South next season and Dryden says he is happy with this, although he felt the Conference authorities' decision had gone right down to the wire.

"There were votes going on all over the place and it was almost a toss up as to which league we went in," he said.

"I don't think it makes too much difference although I enjoyed the South last season with the amount of football played.

"We learnt a lot from that season and hopefully we can go and compete next season."
