Workington to resume Jansen talks

Matt Jansen

Workington Reds boss Darren Edmondson says he will continue talks with former Blackburn striker Matt Jansen when the player returns from holiday.

Edmondson and Jansen are former team-mates at Carlisle United where the two played in the 1990s.

"We will have some more discussions early next week," Edmondson told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"He's obviously got offers but I'm sure he'll give me more of an idea of what he's looking for."

Jansen, 31, is currently out of football after a brief spell with Wrexham at the end of last season.

Depending on our finances, Nick is someone I like as a footballer

"From our point of view, it's probably been blown out of proportion," Edmondson said. "I've known Matt for a lot of years and I was just trying to gauge where Matt was at within himself.

"I know it's well below where he should be playing but I thought if he'd like to come to an environment he can enjoy, then I would give him that opportunity."

Carlisle-born Jansen began his career with his hometown club before joining Crystal Palace for £1m in 1998.

A £4.1m move to Blackburn Rovers followed 12 months later, scoring on his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in January 1999.

Jansen's career declined after a serious motorcycle accident in Rome during the summer of 2002 in which he suffered a brain haemorrhage and fell into a coma.

After returning to the game in 2003, Jansen had spells with Coventry City and Bolton Wanderers.

He joined the Blue Square Premier Dragons in March 2009 and made his debut that month - almost three years after his previous competitive appearance.

Edmondson has also opened talks with former Carlisle midfielder Stephen Hindmarch following his release by Shrewsbury Town.

"He's in a situation where he is a little bit down after another knockback in a career that hasn't really kick-started for him," Edmondson said.

"He knows the situation regarding us and I've spoken to him a few times over the last three or four months trying to get him out on loan.

"He knows the door's open for him with us... I'm hopeful that we may see him come down and train pre-season with us."

Edmondson also confirmed an interest in transfer-listed Barrow striker Nick Rogan and former midfielder Shaun Vipond.

Rogan turned down the offer of a new deal at Holker Street last week in favour of concentrating on his full-time studies while Vipond has returned from a spell playing in Sweden after breaking his collarbone.

"Depending on our finances, Nick is someone I like as a footballer," Edmondson said. "If Nick shows an interest then obviously it is something we'd be interested in doing.

"But I'm sure there will lots of clubs interested in Nick Rogan, he's a good footballer at this level and Conference level as well.

"I've spoke to Shaun and - fingers-crossed - he'll be pre-season training with us as well."
