Harrogate Town manager Neil Aspin said he was disappointed with his side's display as they opened the new season with a 2-0 win over Vauxhall Motors.
Midfielder Darren Dunning scored both goals, one in each half.
Aspin told BBC Radio York: "Any win I'll take, especially at home after the troubles we had last year winning games, so I will take the win"
"I know that the players we've got can play better than that. We made hard work really of the win" he added.
Town had no fewer that 12 new faces in the squad and Aspin conceded that had an effect on the performance in wet conditions.
"I know we've got some players in positions who are definitely better than we had last season, but it's not going to just happen overnight."
However Aspin did single out former Hartlepool and Bury goalkeeper Jim Provett for praise.
"The way he commands his penalty area, his hands were very good, he's a welcome addition to our team.
"He has played at a higher level and he's going to improve us in that respect."
Town are next in action on Tuesday at Workington, and Aspin has warned some of his new signings that they are in for a shock.
"If you've been playing professionally, you go and stay in a hotel the day before the game or you stay in the afternoon and you get your feet up.
"In non-league you can't do that. You get on the bus, two-and-a-half-hours to Workington, get out and then hope to produce the goods.
"I won't listen to any excuses, we've got to go to Workington and get a result."
