Up front Mali midfielder Seydou Keita scored a rare hat-trick for Barcelona as they thrashed past Real Zaragoza 6-1.
Barcelona are now top of the table three points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who could only manage a goalless draw way at Sporting Gijon.
In defence Cameroon goalkeeper Idris Carlos Kameni pulled off a string of great saves to prevent Sevilla from overcoming his Espanyol side - his performance meant the game ended goalless.
ENGLAND
Ghana's Michael Essien scored a spectacular long range goal for Chelsea as they thrashed Blackburn Rovers 5-0, Ivory Coast Captain Didier Drogba scoring the fifth to take his tally to eight for the season.
GERMANY
The Ivory Coast's Didier Ya Konan scored the only goal of the game as hosts Hannover beat Stuttgart 1-0.
FRANCE
Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh found the target for Bordeaux in a comfortable 3-0 win over visiting Le Mans.
His compatriot Youssef Hadji completed a comeback for Nancy as he scored their winner as they beat Grenoble 2-1, Tunisia's David Jemmali earlier scored an own goal that had brought Nancy level.
The Ivory Coast's Gervinho gave Lille the lead at Auxerre but they still lost 3-2
Mali's Mamadou Bagayoko opened the scoring for Nice as they thrashed Lyon 4-1.
Rennes won 3-0 at home over Montpellier - with Senegal's Moussa Sow and Ghana's Asamoah Gyan among the scorers.
ITALY
Ghana's Sulley Muntari grabbed the first for champions Inter Milan as they went to the top of the league after they beat Catania 2-1.
SCOTLAND
Senegal's Morgaro Gomis helped Dundee United win 2-0 away at Aberdeen.
HOLLAND
Zambian Jacob Mulenga scored his first goal for FC Utrecht, giving them the lead two minutes before half-time in their 2-1 triumph over Roda.
Striker Mounir El Hamdaoui gave champions AZ Alkmaar the lead after 28 minutes, but despite the Moroccan's goal they lost 4-2 to Ajax.
Fellow Moroccan Said Boutahr was however on the winning side after scoring one of the goals for Willem II as they beat Heerenveen 4-1.
BELGIUM
More Moroccans on target in Belgium with Abdelmajid Oulmers equalising for Charleroi with six minutes remaining as they drew 1-1 with 10-man Westerlo.
And Mbark Boussoufa sealed the win for Anderlecht as they beat Mechelen 2-0.
Senegal's Ibrahim Sidibe was on target for St Truiden who lost 2-1 at home to visiting Gent.
Dorge Kouemaha from Cameroon scored Club Bruges' third goal as they beat Roulers 3-2. Malian Mahamadou Dissa had scored Roulers' second.
PORTUGAL
Angolan Djalma scored twice to help his side Maritimo outclass Pacos Ferreira 3-1.
Senegalese striker Ladji Keita scored the only goal of the game as Setubal beat Leixoes.
Another Senegalese Modu Sougou scored in the last minute for Academica but it was too late as they lost 3-2 to Porto.
TURKEY
Cameroonian Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemata scored the only goal of the game as Diyarbakirspor earned all three points over Genclerbirligi.
Guinea striker Ibrahima Bangoura put Denizlispor ahead after 16 minutes but they still lost 3-1 to Kasimpasa.
Tunisia striker Ali Zitouni put Antalyaspor against Manisaspor before Nigeria's Isaac Promise equalised in the 73rd minute. Antalyaspor eventually won the game 2-1 as Liberia defender Jimmy Dixon of Manisaspor was sent-off.
GREECE
Burkina Faso striker Abdul Diallo was sent-off as Panthrakikos lost 3-1 to Larisa.
