Kadiri Ikhana led Enyimba to Champions League success last December |
A decision on whether Enyimba of Nigeria will keep their 2003 African Champions League title from last season will be known in June.
That month, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) will rule on claims by Egyptian club Ismaili that Enyimba used an ineligible player to win last year's Champions League.
Enyimba made history in December when they defeated Ismaili 2-1 on aggregate to become the first Nigerian club to win the African Cup since its inception in 1964.
In March, the Egyptians claimed that Enyimba midfielder Ahmed 'Yaro Yaro' Garba was ineligible to play in the final since he was registered to another Nigerian club, Kano Pillars.
Ismaili claim that Yaro Yaro never played for Enyimba in the league but for Kano Pillars instead, thus making him ineligible under section 1 (c) of article 25 of Caf's Regulations of Inter-Clubs competitions.
The rule states that for a player to be qualified to play in Caf Clubs competitions, he must 'play regularly in the national championship of the country for the club engaged in the competition of Caf'.
Inter-Club Committee members met on 3 April to discuss the claims but the meeting was adjourned after Caf asked for more time to investigate Ismaili's claims.
"The Inter-Club Committee will decide on the Ismaili protest in early June," said Suleimanu Habuba, Caf's communications director.
"We have asked the Nigeria Football Association for more explanation on some of the issues raised by Ismaili and we are also carrying out our own independent investigations."
The reason for the failure to announce a definite date is because of the logistical difficulties involved in getting all 15 Inter-Club Committee members to meet in Cairo at the same time.
