NFA secretary-general Ogunjobi has said the Egyptian claims are worthless |
The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has rejected claims by Egyptian side Ismaili that African club champions Enyimba used an ineligible player in the 2003 Champions League final.
The NFA secretary-general Taiwo Ogunjobi has dismissed the Egyptians' claim as worthless.
"It's no issue and there's no cause for alarm because we've discovered that the documents tendered by Ismaili for the protest are fake," Ogunjobi said.
On Monday, Ismaili officials complained to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) that Ahmed 'Yaro Yaro' Garba was ineligible to play for Enyimba in the final because he was also registered at another Nigerian club Kano Pillars.
The NFA said on Tuesday it had received a letter on behalf of Enyimba from Caf demanding an explanation for the use of the 23-year-old Yaro Yaro in the second leg of last year's Champions League final.
Enyimba lost the game 1-0 in Egypt, but took the trophy 2-1 on aggregate.
The Egyptian club claims that Yaro Yaro played on fifteen occasions for Kano Pillars in Nigeria's domestic league and represented the Aba-based Enyimba in the Champions League as well.
Should Enyimba be found guilty of the alleged offence, the club faces a possible three-year suspension from continental club competition.
Yaro Yaro, the player at the centre of the storm, is far removed from the furore going on in his homeland since the midfielder was recently sold to Danish club AB Copenhagen.
