Enyimba have won another first for Nigeria |
Nigerian side Enyimba are African Super Cup champions after edging out Tunisia's Etoile Sahel 1-0 in Aba on Sunday. Playing with ten men in front of a home crowd, Enyimba have added the trophy to the Champions League title they won last year when they beat Egyptian side Ismaili in the final.
It was Bob Osim's goal in the 21st minute that took the trophy to Nigeria for the first time despite the late sending off of defender Obinna Nwaneri.
Osim scored the only goal of the clash as he found the back of the net from 25 yards to delight the 20,000 local fans.
In a match played under strength-sapping sunshine, neither side were able to string together a convincing attack until the final minutes when Enyimba's international goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was forced to pull off a string of desperate saves.
As Enyimba were put under pressure, defender Obinna Nwaneri was sent off after cynically hacking down an Etoile Sahel opponent on the edge of the penalty area - although the Tunisian side were unable to convert the resulting free-kick.
The Super Cup was a repeat of the Nations Cup semi-final confrontation between Nigeria and Tunisia which the tournament hosts won after a penalty shoot-out.
Referee Evehe Divine leads Scott Foe off the pitch before the game |
It was also a memorial match for the late Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, whose son Scott took the kick-off.
Foe collapsed and died during the Confederations Cup semi-final match against Colombia in Lyon last year.
The win was a good start for Enyimba's new coach Michael Urukalo, who has inherited a side reinforced with young players.
In December last year, Enyimba beat Ismaili in the Champions League to become the only side from Nigeria to ever win Africa's most prestigious club competition.
The African Super Cup is a contest played between the winners of the African Champions League and the victors of the now-defunct Cup Winners Cup.
Enyimba are the first-ever Nigerian team to win the Super Cup.
