English clubs have three places in the Europa League - for the FA Cup winners, the Carling Cup winners and the fifth-placed team in the Premier League.
The first team to book their place in Europe were Carling Cup winners Birmingham City, who will play in the Europa League after being granted a licence by Uefa, despite earlier fears about their financial situation.
Birmingham City qualified for Europe but were relegated
As Manchester City had already qualified for the Champions League ahead of their FA Cup final win over Stoke City - a consolation for the beaten Potters was that they qualified for the Europa League - while Tottenham Hotspur clinched fifth place by beating Birmingham 2-1 on the final day of the season.
England also earned an extra Europa League place through being one of the top three countries in Uefa's Respect Fair Play league. The highest-place team in the Premier League's Fair Play table that has not yet qualified for Europe - Fulham - will enter the Europa League first qualifying round.
Southampton realistically sealed the second automatic promotion place on 2 May with a 3-1 win over Plymouth but made sure of second spot when they beat Walsall 3-1 on the final day to end a two-year spell in League One, and Peterborough United beat Huddersfield 3-0 in the play-off final to join Brighton and Saints in the Championship.
Four teams are relegated to League Two. Bottom club Swindon Town went down on 25 April after losing 3-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, while that 3-1 defeat by Southampton confirmed Plymouth Argyle's second successive relegation. The Pilgrims suffered a 10-point deduction earlier in the season for going into administration.
Bristol Rovers fell through the trapdoor on the final day following a 2-1 defeat at Colchester although their realistic hopes were ended a week earlier, and Dagenham & Redbridge also dropped after a 5-0 thrashing at Peterborough.
LEAGUE TWO
Chesterfield have dominated League Two for much of the season
Four teams are promoted to non-League's top flight - Blue Square Bet North champions Alfreton Town and play-off winners AFC Telford United, along with South division champions Braintree Town and play-off winners Ebbsfleet United.

Runners-up Celtic and third-placed Hearts will enter the Europa League - while Celtic's victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final opened up an extra Europa League spot for Dundee United, the fourth-placed SPL team, who will enter at the second qualifying round. Hearts enter in the third qualifying round, wth Celtic in the fourth and final qualifying round.
Bottom club Hamilton Academical were relegated to Division One after losing 1-0 at St Johnstone on 10 May.
