St Georges claim Charity Shield victory against Rushen

Football

St Georges started the football season with a 5-3 victory against Rushen to lift the Eric Fletcher Charity Shield at Peel.

Both sides scored twice in the first 18 minutes but a Ciaran McKnulty goal gave the Geordies the lead before half time.

Adam Cregeen levelled the scores for Rushen after 77 minutes but a debut goal from island international Frank Jones made it 4-3.

A late strike from American Conor Doyle sealed victory for St Georges.

Manager Chris Bass said: "We played the better football out of the two teams but there were too many defensive errors on both sides.

"There's a lot more to come from St Georges as the season gets underway."

The Douglas-based team are favourites to win the Manx Premier League which starts on Saturday, 14 August.
