Truro City began life in Southern League Division One with a 0-0 draw at home to Thatcham Town.
And Truro manager Sean McCarthy said the team needed to work together if they were to thrive in the division.
"We're up against teams that are well organised and play good football," the former Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle striker said.
"It's not going to be as easy as the last two or three years," he added. "We need to be organised too."
The visitors from Berkshire had good chances to take an early lead through lively striker Jemal Johnson, but it was Truro who missed the game's best opportunity, Scott Walker heading wide from three yards.
"It's a tough introduction today," said McCarthy. "[Thatcham] finished below mid-table last season but the only positives I'll take out of today is that we kept a clean sheet.
"We did have chances and it just didn't fall for us today. I think we could have been there until tomorrow and we wouldn't have scored but you're going to get days like that," he added.
