The college has yet to win the sabre team trophy

Guernsey's Elizabeth College was named Britain's top school at the Public Schools' Fencing Championships for the third year running.

The college team won two out of three age groups, and two out of three weapons, foil and epee, to lift the Graham Bartlett Cup.

Rob Harnish, senior coach, said he was delighted with the boys' performance.

He said: "This year we turned our attention to the development of our younger fencers."

Jack Miller won a bronze in the under-14 epee and under-16 quarter-final plaques were awarded to Thomas Crame and Benjamin Inderwick.

Harnish said: "As a team they dominated the younger age groups, bringing home both the under-14 and under-16 titles, while losing their grip on the under-18 trophy.

"Across the age groups, the college continued to shine in both foil and epee, bringing home the team cups in both weapons.

"We have not yet managed to bring the Sabre Trophy home, but every year we get a little closer."

He paid tribute to the other island team at the championships, the Ladies College.

He said: "For a small team of just six fencers, their performance was exceptional."

Georgina Lindsay returned with a bronze medal in the girls senior epee, while Fenella Gladstone and Helen Higgs took quarter final plaques.
