Laine to carry flag for Guernsey

Tim Laine
Laine will be Guernsey's flagbearer for the 2009 Games

Windsurfer Tim Laine will carry Guernsey's flag at the opening ceremony of the 2009 Island Games in Aland.

Laine will lead the team out in the traditional parade and water sharing at the opening ceremony on 28 June.

He is one of Guernsey's longest serving athletes - he competed in his first Games in 1993 and has won eight medals, including three team golds.

"I was quite dumbstruck, I wasn't expecting it at all. It's a wonderful privilege and honour," said Laine.

"This is the 13th Games so that means there are only 12 people before me who have done this.

"To lead the Guernsey team out in the opening ceremony is a wonderful thing and I am really pleased they asked me to do it."

Light winds are predicted for the week of competition and that could be good news for Laine, who feels he performs better in those conditions.

Laine is tipping Menorca to win gold and silver but he believes the bronze "is open to just about everyone".
