The design of the medals was inspired by water droplets

Water drops were the inspiration for the design of the medals which will be awarded at the 2009 Island Games.

Games director Terese Flöjt said: "We wanted to come up with something out of the ordinary - water is the common denominator for all the islands.

"It has a large symbolic value and it is the one element joining us as well as keeping us apart."

The 13th Island Games get under way in Aland, a Swedish-speaking island in Finland, on 27 June.
