Taking on the one-day captaincy when long-term opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya gave it up after the World Cup, Atapattu is an intriguing batsman.
In Tests, opponents know him to be a nervous starter who is often extremely vulnerable to hostile, accurate bowling before he gets going.
But on a placid pitch, once he has his eye in, he is one of the hardest batsmen to remove.
His finest moment in one-day cricket was undoubtedly the blistering century he hit at Durban that ruined South Africa's World Cup dream.
In Tests, he famously began with score of 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, and 0. Things have thankfully gone better since then and he has hit a remarkable five double centuries in his career.
