Sussex chairman Jim May has called on the England and Wales Cricket Board to allow time for any proposed changes to the structure of the game to bed in.

Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson has criticised the current county schedule, which is under review.

May told BBC Sussex: "We're in very uncertain times at the moment.

"If we're going to make some changes then hopefully we'll let it run for three to five years. Chopping and changing doesn't make a lot of sense."

He added: "We'd like to come to a situation where we have a settled structure that supporters can understand."

Robinson has complained that 16 Twenty20 group matches on top of County Championship and a 40-over competition is too much for players to handle, and May thinks cutting the number of games will be looked at by the ECB.

"The ECB and various other people think we should cut between six and 12 days play per annum and it's a question of how we do that," he said.

"You've got to get the balance right and that's what all the debate is about now."

May has hinted that the ECB could slash the number of T20 matches for next season.

"It's likely the County Championship will be the same and it's quite possible there'll be fewer Twenty20 matches next year," he said.

"Really it's all up for grabs at the moment. But whenever we agree something, we should let it bed in."
