| Thursday, 13 February, 2003, 16:34 GMT Moores elevated at Sussex Sussex have promoted Peter Moores to the post of director of cricket. The news comes just two days after chief executive Nigel Russell was sacked just three months into his job. Chairman David Green said: "Peter's new responsibilities are for the whole of the cricket side. "He will continue in his role as coach of the first team but we are making sure he has a lot more support in that particular role." Army man Russell was appointed in July, a full nine months after the previous incumbent, Dave Gilbert, left to return home to Australia. He was formerly with the Army, and overcame several candidates for the job, including the club's former opener Neil Lenham, now Sussex's commercial manager. The decision to sack him followed a formal review by the committee at a meeting last week. Green said: "The decision was a difficult one to take but was made in the best long-term interests of Sussex CCC." Russell's appointment was one of the last moves of former chairman Don Trangmar who resigned in April. The county finished sixth in division one of the County Championship during the past season, avoiding relegation after their elevation the previous year. However, their performances in the one-day game were disappointing, with the Sharks finishing just one place off bottom in the National League. |
