 | | Monday, 30 July, 2001, 09:50 GMT 10:50 UK Gilbert heading for home  Gilbert: Widely respected as a coach and administrator Sussex chief executive Dave Gilbert is to leave the county at the end of September to return home to Australia. He will take up a similar post with Cricket New South Wales, whose current chief Brian Hughes is retiring. Gilbert has been at Hove since 1997 after previously spending two years as cricket manager at Surrey. He was initially deputy chief executive and general manager before being promoted to chief executive two years ago. "We are obviously disappointed to lose someone of David's calibre," said Sussex chairman Don Trangmar. "He has made a significant contribution to Sussex cricket in the past two years. However, to be offered the top job in NSW is a tremendous opportunity which David felt he could not resist." Gilbert made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 1983-84, but moved on to Tasmania five years later.
A right arm fast medium bowler, he also had a spell in English county cricket as Gloucestershire's overseas player. Gilbert played nine Tests for Australia, the first against England at The Oval in 1985, and took 16 wickets. He also appeared in 14 one-day internationals. "David epitomises the new generation of cricket leaders emerging all over the world," said New South Wales Cricket Association chairman Bob Horsell. "He is the complete package and we are delighted he has accepted the opportunity to guide NSW cricket into the 21st century."
