| Tuesday, 24 September, 2002, 13:50 GMT 14:50 UK Sussex strengthen attack Sussex have signed exciting pace bowler Shaun Rashid to bolster their attack for 2003. Rashid, 25, joins the south-coast side on a one-year contract after impressing in minor county cricket with Bedfordshire and trials with the Sussex 2nd XI. He is no relation to former Sussex star Umer Rashid, who died tragically in a diving accident last April. But the club spoke to the all-rounder's family before confirming the deal. "It was unexpected to have another Rashid play for Sussex since the club's tragic loss," said Sussex coach Peter Moores. "The Rashid family acknowledged that, although it would be difficult for them to see the name in the Sussex squad, they understood the club must sign added strength and depth. "Shaun is a naturally talented bowler who has the potential to bowl genuinely quick. His development over the coming 12 months will be an exciting prospect." Sussex presented a county cap to Umer Rashid's father at a memorial match a fortnight ago. Proceeds from the game will go towards a new scoreboard and to establishing a spin coaching clinic in his name. |
