Rashid, 26, and his 18-year-old brother Burhan both died at Concord Falls, a tourist spot on the Caribbean island of Grenada.

Sussex were taking part in a triangular series, also involving fellow pre-season tourists Yorkshire and Northants.

"Caprice was swimming with the brothers in a pool at the foot of one of the falls, with two security guards looking on, when the younger brother got into difficulties," said Detective Sergeant Norman Ferguson.

"The older brother went to assist him but both went under and did not resurface."

The pool at the foot of the waterfall is 50ft deep.

The Daily Telegraph reported that five people had died at the beauty spot in the last decade.

Despite the accidents there is no lifeguard on duty, nor any safety equipment.

'Happiest days'

Sussex chairman Don Trangmar has described Rashid's death as "a real tragedy and a great shock for the club".

"Umer was a player who ironically was probably enjoying the happiest days of his cricket career down at Sussex. He was making his mark, particularly in the one-day game.

"He had a tremendous natural talent and was still developing, so we are going to miss a player with tremendous potential," he said.

"He was popular in the side and popular with the members. The younger players have been particularly badly affected by this tragedy.

"The ability to bounce back in these occasions is easy to talk about but not easy to achieve.

"We will talk with the players and try to put a sense of perspective on what is a very difficult situation."

The Sussex players and staff are to fly home from Grenada after cancelling the remainder of their tour.

The club's pre-season press day, scheduled for next Monday, has been postponed.

Other players did not go with the trio to the beauty spot as they had seen the falls on a previous tour.

Media relations officer Francesca Watson said Rashid was a favourite with the club's staff.

"You couldn't help but smile when he was around. He will be dreadfully missed," Watson said.

The accident occurred just 10 days after the death of Surrey's Ben Hollioake in a car crash in Perth.

The two counties will meet each other in the opening round of the County Championship on 19 April.
