Graham Wagg celebrates taking a wicket for Derbyshire |
Graham Wagg has confirmed his move from Derbyshire and the all-rounder admits playing County Championship Division One cricket lured him to Glamorgan. The former England youth international has completed a three-year deal at the promotion chasers starting next season. The 27-year-old: "I want to play at the highest level against the best players around the country. It is a challenge for me and a challenge for the county." Glamorgan are guaranteed promotion if the Welsh county beat Derbyshire. Director of cricket Matthew Maynard has previously revealed he wanted to sign an all-rounder to boost Glamorgan's Twenty20 campaign next season. "Graham is a quality player and a superb edition to the squad," said Maynard. | He is a talented player and I'm sure will help bring some silverware to the club in future years Glamorgan director of cricket Matthew Maynard on Graham Wagg |
"He is a talented player and I'm sure will help bring some silverware to the club in future years." Wagg turned down attention from Nottinghamshire and Durham to end his four-year stay at Derbyshire and join Glamorgan. "Matt has tried to snap me up for the past two years," said Wagg. "Other counties were interested, some big-name counties, but I stuck with the contract terms I agreed with Glamorgan." Wagg played alongside Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple on the six-a-side England tour to Hong Kong earlier this year. "I know Jamie quite well and have a little chat with him," said Wagg. "It is a great place to play cricket, especially with Test match status, and they are ambitious." Maynard has assessed his medical reports and sealed the signing of Wagg, who made his debut for Warwickshire in 2002 before joining Derbyshire in 2006, on Wednesday. But he was banned for 15 months after admitting using cocaine in 2004. Wagg has enjoyed a successful spell with the county since joining in 2006, taking 184 wickets at an average of 33.35 as well as scoring 1,711 runs at 25.92. He completed the double of scoring over 500 runs and taking more than 50 wickets during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but an Achilles injury has limited him to just one appearance so far this season. Maynard wants Twenty20 all-rounders to bolster his squad next season and his desire to sign Australian pace bowler Shan Tait and fellow countryman Mark Cosgrove next year limits his options to home-grown signings.
