Smith was named the club's most improved player last season

Derbyshire have named all-rounder Greg Smith as their new vice-captain.

The 27-year-old, who made his Derbyshire debut in 2006, skippered the side in the absence of Chris Rogers during the pre-season tour of Barbados.

Smith said: "To be named vice-captain of a side containing so many excellent players is a real honour and I'm going to enjoy the responsibility.

"I'd love to be considered as a future captain and I hope this stands me in good stead to achieve that ambition."

Last season saw Smith produce a career-best return of 977 first-class runs at an average of 42.47 and he has begun 2010 in excellent form, posting scores of 66, 20, 54, 28 and 165 not out in his five innings to date.

He has also taken regular wickets with the ball and head of cricket John Morris in is no doubt Smith's promotion is a wise move.

"Greg demonstrated aptitude and flair as a leader during his time captaining the side in the Caribbean and the vice-captaincy is his just reward," Morris said.

"He is also an excellent example to his fellow players having worked hard on all aspects of his game to become the multi-dimensional and pivotal figure we now enjoy having in our team."
