Kiwi James Franklin hit his maiden one-day century for Gloucestershire

James Franklin's first one-day century inspired Gloucestershire to a 51-run win over Derbyshire in the opening Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture at Bristol.

The New Zealand all-rounder responded to his new position as opener by hitting 133 off 121 balls.

Alex Gidman (35) and Chris Taylor (32) offered support in a total of 230-5.

Derbyshire were all out for 179 in reply, with 41 for John Sadler. Steve Kirkby (3-44) and Anthony Ireland (2-40) did the damage with the ball.

Gloucestershire coach John Bracewell told BBC Radio Bristol:

"James provides a little bit more power and he did it superbly. It's the first time he's batted that high (up the order).

"A lot of his hundreds have been long. He's used to batting for a long time.

"It was a little bit of a reward for the hard work the team put in and hopefully that will start to build their confidence. They're a better team than results have indicated so far."
