Greg Smith followed up a career-best 165 not out by taking 4-66 to bowl Derbyshire to within sight of victory over Glamorgan at Derby.

Smith and Steffan Jones added a crucial 78 for the last wicket as the hosts, 285-9 overnight, were eventually bowled out for 363 to lead by 91.

Only Gareth Rees then resisted with 102 before falling to Smith as Glamorgan were dismissed for 211.

Set 121 to win, Derbyshire lost Wayne Madsen as they reached 26-1 by stumps.

The game was in the balance at the start of the third morning, with Derbyshire only leading by 13.

But Jones and Smith, who beat his previous best 126 against Gloucestershire last summer, took the game away from Glamorgan whilst sharing a Derbyshire 10th-wicket record against the Welsh county.

An Achilles injury to Graham Wagg left the home side a bowler light but they were boosted by capturing the dangerous Mark Cosgrove before lunch, the Australian upper-cutting Tom Lungley to Jones at third man.

The visitors were 41 behind when Michael Powell lobbed a simple catch to short leg off Robin Peterson, and only 10 in front when Ben Wright was caught behind chasing a wide one from Jones.

Garry Park trapped Jamie Dalrymple leg before shouldering arms, while Jim Allenby was also dismissed lbw, this time to Peterson.

And although opener Rees kept going he began to run out of partners as Smith bowled Mark Wallace and caught Dean Cosker off his own off-spin bowling.

Rees reached three figures from 160 balls with his side 171-7 but his defiance was ended when he was trapped leg before reverse-sweeping Smith, who also bowled David Harrison with one that kept low.

Chris Ashling and Huw Waters struck some lusty blows but they could not prevent Glamorgan staring at defeat.
