LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Glamorgan 272, Derbyshire 7-0 Derbys 3pts, Glamorgan 2pts Match scorecard
Jones is in his second spell with Derbyshire |
Three wickets with the new ball by Steffan Jones put Glamorgan on the back foot on the first day of their County Championship clash with Derbyshire. Jones' (4-60) burst left the visitors 43-3 after electing to bat at Derby. But Glamorgan dug in and were thankful to half-centuries from Ben Wright (60), Mark Wallace (58) and Jim Allenby (57) as they eventually made 272. Jones also wrapped up the innings by removing Huw Waters before seeing his side reach 7-0 in reply by stumps. It was his opening burst that set the early tone for the game, claiming 3-24 in seven overs to leave Glamorgan reeling. Llanelli-born Jones struck a big blow with the ninth ball of the day, trapping Australian opener Mark Cosgrove lbw, and followed it up by having Mike Powell caught by Tom Lungley at long leg and Gareth Rees caught behind. But, after Jamie Dalrymple was removed by Greg Smith, Wright and Allenby steadied the ship with a stand of 73 for the fifth wicket. Robin Peterson (3-77) brought that to an end when Wright, who had earlier survived a sharp chance at short leg, edged one on to his stumps, and followed it up by having Allenby adjudged leg before in the last over before tea. Wallace ensured Glamorgan banked a second batting bonus point by completing his second half-century in successive matches before he was caught behind off Lungley's first ball back, leaving Jones to polish off the innings.
