LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Glamorgan 272, Derbyshire 285-9 Derbys 5pts, Glamorgan 5pts Match scorecard
Smith came to the crease with his side in trouble on 65-4 |
Greg Smith hit an unbeaten 121 to help Derbyshire edge into a first-innings lead on the second day of their clash with Glamorgan at Derby. After resuming on 7-0, the hosts looked in trouble after slumping to 65-4. But Smith and Garry Park (61) then shared a partnership 156, a fifth-wicket county record against Glamorgan, to put them back on track. Park's departure heralded another clatter of wickets as Derbyshire closed on 285-9, a lead of 13. The partnership between Smith, playing his 100th first-class innings, and Park beat the stand of 151 between Jonny Owen and Colin Wells at Cardiff in 1996. It was a stand that Derbyshire badly needed after Glamorgan struck some early blows. The most celebrated was that of star Derbyshire batsmen Chris Rogers, who was trapped leg before by Jim Allenby to bring Smith and Park together. But the pair batted their side back into the contest before the late flurry of wickets, including three in 18 deliveries with the new ball, left the game delicately poised.
