Optimus are the 2009 Jersey Twenty20 Champions after beating St Ouen by five runs in the final at Grainville. The match began on a sombre note with a minute's silence in memory of Grace Crocker, Optimus player Nigel Crocker's baby daughter who died on Friday. Optimus batted first, ending on 130-5, with former Jersey captain Matt Hague top scoring on 63 not out. Optimus captain Tony Carlyon felt that while it was great to finish the season with a win, it was a real struggle emotionally. "It was a very difficult day all round, not just for us but for all the players," he told BBC Jersey. "I know the whole Jersey cricketing communities thoughts and prayers go out to Nigel and his family at this time. "It was nice for Nigel to play and hopefully take his mind off things at least for a few moments." In the earlier semi-final's, St Ouen embarrassed Springfield, winning by 154 runs. Batting first, St Ouen made 195, with Baigent (59) and Nel (50) again the western parish's top scorers. In reply Springfirld could only muster 41 with Paul Horton doing the damage, taking 4-5, with all four wickets coming in his first over. In the other semi-final Optimus had a five-wicket win over Rathbones OV's. OV's batted first, ending on 124-3, Andrew Dewhurst made 55 and Chris Jones hit 36. Optimus chased the runs down with two overs to spare with Ryan Driver (50) and captain Tony Carlyon (42) leading the way.
