Guernsey will host World League

Guernsey's Lee Savident
Guernsey have a great chance to get promoted on home soil

Guernsey has been chosen to host the Division Seven tournament of the World Cricket League in 2009.

The island were given WCL status last week as the International Cricket Council expands the international game.

And the island will now host their first ever foray into global cricket in either May or June 2009.

The island will play host to Nigeria, Japan, Suriname, Bahrain and Gibraltar - with the top two sides being promoted to Division Six in September.

Should Guernsey win that tournament in Singapore they would then be lifted up to Division Five - the same level as big rivals Jersey.

Guernsey has already hosted an international tournament, the European Division Two in August 2008.

The hosts lost in the final of that event to Jersey, but in getting to the last two did enough to be chosen to play in the lowest rung of the expanding world cricket ladder.
