Dan Wilson has set a new league record of 1,446 runs in a season |
York opening batsman Dan Wilson has set a new Yorkshire Premier League record for most runs in a season. The Australian needed 43 to overhaul the 1,421 scored by Andrew Bourke in 2003 - and he duly scored 67 in the nine-wicket home win over Harrogate. York all-rounder Nick Kay told BBC York: "It couldn't happen to a nicer bloke, he's a class act. "His heart and soul's in the club. Our team performance has always been more important to him than his own record." Former Yorkshire captain David Byas held the record for 20 years when he scored 1,394 runs in his youth for Scarborough before arriving at Headingley. Castleford's overseas star Brendon Ricci then came within 40 runs of passing it in 1991 before club cricketer Bourke finally brought the record to Savile Park in 2003. "You want these sorts of achievements at your club," said Kay. "Having Dan at the club has already attracted numerous youngsters to our facilities here. "He's a great ambassador for the club and it's massive for us. We're just so happy for him and we love having him here." Wilson, despite claiming not to be a true all-rounder, also took four wickets, as did Tom Bartram, as Harrogate were dismissed for 135. York's eight-point win keeps them top of the table with two games to go, one of them a clash with challengers Yorkshire Academy. Scarborough kept up their slight title hopes, beating Sheffield United by 98 runs. Kunwar Banzil made 124 as Scarborough piled up 276-8. United reached 178-9, James Finch taking 5-42, but Scarborough could not take the final wicket and so only took six points.
