Steve Carlyon and his brother are back in the island squad |
Jersey have made five changes to their squad for the World Cricket League Division Four Tournament in Tanzania. Returning to the side after missing the European Division Two tournament last month are Steve and Tony Carlyon. Also brought back is former island captain Meeku Patidar along with Ben Stevens and debutante Matt Hanley. Chris Jones, Bradley Vowden, the Crocker brothers Nigel and Ian and Sam de la Haye are out of the victorious European squad. Matt Hague continues to captain the side while Jersey's top player Ryan Driver is also in the squad, which is coached by former South Africa international Peter Kirsten. Steve Carlyon had the eighth highest run average in the World Cricket league Division Five tournament in Jersey earlier in the summer, when the island lost in the final to Afghanistan. | JERSEY SQUAD FOR WCL DIVISION FOUR Matt Hague (capt) Steve Carlyon Tony Carlyon Peter Gough Johnny Gough Bobby Minty Tom Minty Andrew Dewhurst Sam Dewhurst Ryan Driver Meeku Patidar Matt Hanley Ben Stevens Anthony Kay |
He opened the batting with Peter Gough and the pair put on the two biggest opening wicket stands in the event of 141 not out against Japan and 122 against the USA. Brother Tony played in all seven of Jersey's matches and took eight wickets with an average of just 9.62. There are three other sets of brothers in the squad. Sam and Andrew Dewhurst, Peter and Johnny Gough and island manager Chris Minty's sons Bobby and Tom. The only debutant in the side is teenager Matt Hanley. A wicket-keeper and middle-order batsman he was part of the Jersey side which won the European Division Two Under-19s tournament last summer. The event begins in Tanzania Saturday, 4 October and as well as the hosts also sees Hong Kong, Fiji, Afghanistan and Italy taking part, with the top two going onto the third division championships in Argentina next January. Jersey beat the Italians in two one-day internationals in 2007 to help earn their place as an Associate member of the ICC, so will be confident of being up to the standard on the tournament.
