O'Connell leads way in Shrews win

Shrewsbury beat Attock by 64 runs to go third in the Birmingham League Division One on Saturday.

Reece O'Connell (62) and Jack Shantry (60) led their side to 242-8 as Imran Sabir took five wickets for Attock.

Attock were bowled out for 178 in reply, Reece O'Connell and Michael Barnard took three wickets each.

The victory gave Shrewsbury 24 points and leaves them on 134 behind Bromsgrove and Old Hill and 14 points clear of fourth-placed Stratford.

In the Premier league, Walsall scored 187-9 in the first innings against Shifnal with Brad Wilson (55) the top scorer.

Left-arm spinner Guy Bulpitt took six wickets to restrict the visitors.

Shropshire skipper James Ralph top scored with 47 for Shifnal but Andy Miller's (5-35) for Walsall gave the Gorway Road side the maximum points, leaving Shifnal just 14 points off bottom spot.

In Division One, Wellington got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory against Sutton. Sutton were bowled out for 144 and in reply Mickey Davidson (69*) took Wellington past the winning post with the loss of just three wickets.

In Division Two, Newport's struggle continued as they fell to a six-wicket defeat against Berkswell.

Newport were bowled out for 179 with Sultan Khan (5-31) causing the damage and in reply Mohammed Akhlaq top scored with 79 not out.

It was a good day for St Georges as Andy Johnson's 75 not out gave them a respectable total of 216-9. Water Orton held on for a losing draw with Steve Taylor and Hitshu Bachandi taking four wickets each for the Shropshire side.

In Division Three, it was a day to forget for Bridgnorth, bowled out for 111, they were confined to defeat by former Walsall skipper Chris Borough's who steered Brockhampton home with 42 not out.

Whitchurch managed to beat league newcomers Lichfield by six wickets.

Lichfield were bowled out for 146 with Sam Williams taking six wickets and Whitchurch's Maisam Hasnain scored 86 in reply to lead them to victory.

Oswestry made the trip to Wolverhampton-based Fordhouses.

Warwick Flyn (70) helped Oswestry to 181 as Alan Chapman (5-49) and Jatin Kohli (4-58) took the wickets for Fordhouses.

In reply, the home side struggled to 139-9, Alan Chapman scored 53 to help save the game.
