First Test, Guyana, day three (stumps):
South Africa 130-6 v West Indies 543-5 dec
Jacques Rudolph was Powell's second victim |
West Indies bowlers Pedro Collins, Reon King and Daren Powell each grabbed two wickets as South Africa tumbled on day three of the first Test. The tourists crashed to 130-6 in reply to the West Indies' first innings 543-5 declared before bad light stopped play eight overs early.
Mark Boucher was 32 not out and Nicky Boje unbeaten on 21, with South Africa 214 runs short of the follow-on target.
After a three-hour delay for rain, South Africa fell to 16-3 early on.
Finding some swing in overcast conditions, Collins had Graeme Smith caught behind on two then Powell had Jacques Rudolph caught first ball by Ryan Hinds.
South Africa were dealt a further blow two balls later when Jacques Kallis bottom-edged an attempted pull off Powell on to his stumps.
Groundstaff work to dry out the ground at Bourda |
Despite the dispute which saw seven players left out of the side, Powell's inclusion for his first Test in two years was a surprise.
But he justified his inclusion, and proved wrong the selectors at South African province Gauteng, where he struggled to make his mark last season.
Left-armer Collins trapped Herschelle Gibbs in front for five with a delivery that pitched in line with leg stump and angled across the right-hander.
Collins had figures of 2-21 from six overs at tea, while Powell took 2-18 from his six overs.
AB de Villiers was the fifth man out, caught off King by wicket-keeper Courtney Browne on 41, and King struck again with the score on 95, with Andrew Hall caught by Collins for two.
Bourda groundstaff were in action all morning trying to dry the playing area after overnight rain left it waterlogged.
Forty-five overs were scheduled but only 37 were bowled.
