South Africa triumph in Trinidad
Second Test, Trinidad: West Indies 347 & 194; South Africa 398 & 146-2. South Africa win by eight wickets

Makhaya Ntini claimed the best match figures by a South African in a Test as the tourists clinched victory in the second Test against West Indies.

Ntini finished with 13-132 as the Windies were bowled out for 194 on the final day in Trinidad.

That left South Africa with just 144 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

And a solid opening stand of 117 from AB de Villiers (62) and Graeme Smith (41) meant they had few alarms as they cruised to an eight-wicket victory.

West Indies went into day five in reasonable shape at 170-5 but were rapidly undone by Ntini.

Ramnaresh Sarwan finished on 107 not out for the home side, but there was little support for him from the tail.

Ntini started the day by having Bravo caught behind before trapping Courtney Browne leg before and bowling Pedro Collins and Reon King with full-length deliveries.

In between, Andre Nel had Daren Powell caught by Jacques Kallis at slip as the hosts subsided to 194 all out.

The bounce at the Queen's Park Oval had been variable to say the least and an away win appeared far from a formality.

Indeed, the first ball of South Africa's second innings kept alarmingly low but the West Indies pacemen failed to take the hint, bowling too wide, too full or too short.

However, an intriguing finish could still have been on the cards if substitute Ricardo Powell had held on at gully when De Villiers was on 15.

Browne then missed a stumping chance off Chris Gayle when the opener was on 26, and Reon King bowled the same batsman with a no-ball on 31.

King's problems continued after lunch when Smith turned his angled delivery straight to Brian Lara at square-leg, only to see the umpire signal that the bowler had overstepped the mark.

The openers made the most of their good luck and a regular diet of loose balls, with De Villiers reaching his half-century off 87 deliveries.

Smith patiently accumulated 41 at the other end before driving loosely at a pitched-up Bravo ball and edging to Gayle at first slip.

Powell then got through De Villiers' defences with one which seamed in to dismiss him for 62 shortly before tea, but the two Jacques, Rudolph and Kallis, ushered the visitors home.
