Chanderpaul claims a double ton
First Test, Guyana, day two (stumps):
West Indies 543-5dec v South Africa 2-0

Shivnarine Chanderpaul
It was a satisfying day for new skipper Chanderpaul
New skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit a career-best 203 not out as the West Indies declared on 543-5 on day two against South Africa in the first Test.

Chanderpaul shone on his first Test as captain while Wavell Hinds earlier fired a superb 213, the best score for a West Indian against South Africa.

Hinds' stand with Chanderpaul was worth a record 284 for the fourth wicket.

South Africa reached 2-0 after one ball before bad light stopped play.

The morning session was reduced to an hour's play because of mopping up operations following overnight rain.

West Indies resumed on 347-3, and quickly picked up from where they left off against a lacklustre South African attack.

Day one was tough and I wasn't happy, but we came back well

Hinds was in superb form and hit 34 fours and two sixes, reaching 200 with a push for four through backward point off Andre Nel.

He was eventually dismissed in the fifth over after lunch when he edged an attempted expansive drive from Charl Langeveldt to Mark Boucher, who took a simple catch.

The wicket came with only four runs added to the lunchtime total of 386-3, with the partnership the best for any country in Georgetown and for West Indies against South Africa.

But South Africa could not maintain the momentum as Chanderpaul and Ryan Hinds continued to punish the visitors.

Chanderpaul soon passed his previous Test best of 140 while Hinds brought up the 100 partnership just before tea with a leg glance off Andrew Hall.

Although South Africa looked devoid of ideas, Jacques Kallis caught Hinds at slip off spinner Nicky Boje.

And as soon as Chanderpaul, who faced 370 balls and hit 23 fours, reached his double-hundred with a four off Boje, he declared despite his side looking strong.

Graeme Smith faced just two deliveries off fast bowler Pedro Collins' first over, one of which was a no-ball, before the umpires offered the batsmen the light.
