Marsh slams 'dumb' cricket
Rod Marsh
Marsh was dismayed by his young team's performance
Coach Rod Marsh launched a stinging attack on the England A team following a six-wicket defeat by South Zone.

The home side scored 503-4 to win a match in which they had been second best for the first three days.

"We had no-one to blame but ourselves. I don't know whether it's arrogance or what, but it's pretty dumb," he said.

"When you bowl with little discipline, miss easy opportunities in the field, you don't expect to win cricket matches at this level."

It was a bitterly disappointing final day performance by England A, who had the home side 1-2 during the final session on Monday.

And it came at the end of a game in which batting star Kevin Pietersen made a hundred in each innings.

Venugopal Rao was the South Zone hero, scoring an unbeaten 228, but there were also centuries by Sridharan Sriram and Subramaniam Badrinath.

"All you have to do is bowl the right lines, the right lengths and set the right field and no team should be able to score at four runs an over in that situation.

"When you don't bowl the right lines and you don't bowl the right lengths, and you don't set the right fields, then they get away - the three boys played very well for them," Marsh told the BBC.

Asked what his players would take out of the game, Marsh replied "a lot of heartache, if they've got any pride about them".

He said: "Some of them will take a lot of heartache away, others will have forgotten about it already.

"That doesn't upset me, but it's going to upset their cricket careers, I think."
