Tour match, Bangalore: Karnataka Cricket Association XI 206-6 beat England A 203-7 by four wickets Ed Smith played some stylish strokes during England's innings |
Vinayak Uthappa hit an unbeaten 101 to condemn England A to their second defeat in 24 hours in Bangalore. He led a Karnataka Cricket Association XI to 206-6 in reply to England A's 203-7 as the home side won the game with 4.3 overs to spare.
Ed Smith top scored with 52 as the tourists improved on Friday's dismal batting effort, which saw them bowled out for just 116.
Karnataka slumped to 11-3 in reply but Uthappa stood firm to see them home.
Skipper Alex Gidman (finger) and pace bowler Simon Jones (knee) were again missing for England A, who brought in Kent spinner James Tredwell replacing Shaftab Khalid.
Batting was the first order of business, however, after the home side won the toss and chose to field.
Scott Newman (40) and Kadeer Ali (24) gave them a good start with a stand of 76, but they were tied down by an impressive spell from off-spinner Sudhindra Shinde.
He took 2-27 from 10 overs, having Newman stumped and then bowling highly-rated Kevin Pietersen for 16.
After reaching 144-2, England A lost four wickets for 33 runs with Smith caught and bowled and Matt Prior and Bilal Shafayat falling to medium pacer Dodda Ganesh for nine and three respectively.
Yorkshire's Michael Lumb made 34 not out to see the total past 200 and England A seemed to have the match under control after Simon Francis had home opener Rowland Barrington caught behind. Shinde was caught by Smith off Lancashire paceman Sajid Mahmood and Mithun Beerala was run out as three Karnataka batsmen registered ducks.
Simon Binny, who took 4-24 in Friday's game, showed his ability with the bat as he helped steady the innings in a stand of 81 with Uthappa before he was dismissed by Tredwell for 42.
Mahmood was the most impressive bowler and he also picked up the wicket of Yegati Girish for 33 for figures of 2-23 from eight overs.
But he could not find a way through the defences of Uthappa who reached a deserved hundred shortly before the end.
