England A bounced back from a humiliating defeat in their last game to bowl out East Zone for 283 on day one in Amritsar.
Captain James Tredwell picked up 5-101 with his off-spin and he was backed up by Graham Napier, who took 3-54.
Opener Shiv Das carried his bat for 124 not out, but Mahinda Dhoni's 52 was the only other score of note.
England A lost to South Zone by six wickets on Tuesday after the home side scored 503-4 in the fourth innings.
Their team was reinforced by Yorkshire paceman Steve Kirby, who took the place of West Indies-bound Simon Jones.
But he struggled to find his rhythm after Tredwell chose to field first and Das and Dhoni put on 93 for the first wicket in some comfort.
Kirby conceded 30 from his first six overs but made a vital breakthrough just before lunch when Dhoni was caught by Ed Smith for 52.

East Zone slumped from 97-1 at the interval to 99-3 as Napier won two lbw decisions soon after the re-start to dismiss Arindam Das and Deep Dasgupta for ducks.
Devang Gandhi scratched around for seven as he and Das added 48 for the fourth wicket before being caught by Kevin Pietersen off Tredwell, who struck again when he won an lbw verdict against Kiran Powar (13).
East Zone's decline continued after tea despite useful contributions from Sun Lahiri, who was evntually run out for 17, and Utpal Chatterjee.
The latter helped add 45 for the eighth wicket before he was caught and bowled by Tredwell for 23.
Das looked a class above his team-mates and eventually ran out of partners when last man Shib Paul was bowled the last ball of the day from Essex all-rounder Napier.
