Pietersen century in vain
Tour match, Bangalore: India A 229-8 (41.1 overs) beat England A 228 (46 overs) by two wickets

England A suffered their second defeat in the space of 24 hours against India A despite an innings of 131 by Kevin Pietersen in Bangalore.

The tourists had three batsmen run out as they were dismissed for 228.

Dinesh Mongia hit 88 for India A, who were cruising along at 189-2 before Lancashire pace bowler Sajid Mahmood inspired a fightback.

He took 4-51 as the home side lost six wickets for 37 runs, but they reached the target with 8.5 overs to spare.

Apart from the form of Pietersen and Mahmood, there was good news for England A in the return to action of Glamorgan paceman Simon Jones.

He passed a fitness test on his knee and managed a full 10-over spell, bowling Mithun Manhas for four as he returned figures of 1-45.

But the news was less good for fans of Bilal Shafayat, who was banned for a match by team management after swearing when he was run out for 10.

After losing Monday's match by 55 runs, England A batted first after skipper James Tredwell won the toss.

The decision to promote Pietersen up the order to open paid off as he took the attack to the bowlers, despite losing partner Matt Prior for four with only 11 on the board.

He hit three sixes and 12 fours in his 122-ball innings before he was seventh out, caught off Shib Paul

Michael Lumb (24) helped add 70 for the second wicket but the innings declined as Shafayat, Graham Napier (four) and Tredwell (one) were all victims of some poor running between the wickets.

Graeme Wagg played the only other innings of note, making 29 as paceman Munaf Patel took 3-42 for the home side.

India A were given a flying start in reply as Mongia and Gautam Gambhir put on 84 in 13 overs before Gambhir was lbw to Simon Francis for 37.

Sridharan Sriram made 50 before he was run out and Mongia missed out on a second successive century when he was tempted forward by Pietersen's off-spin and stumped by Prior.

Mahmood raised hopes of an England A win by removing Jai Yadav, Sreekumar Nair, Ajay Ratra and Ramesh Powar.

But home skipper Sairaj Bahutule kept his head to see his side home with a 10 not out.
