 Mads Larsen goes down as Brian Magee wins the European title fight in Aarhus
Brian Magee is optimistic that his stunning European super-middleweight triumph on Saturday will earn him a world title shot. Magee told BBC Sport that his phone had been "red hot" after his seventh-round stoppage of Mads Larsen in Aarhus. "There's been a lot of interest already. Things are looking very good," added Magee. The win has rejuvenated Magee's career after a difficult 2009 when he was forced to give up the British title. Magee had to relinquish the British belt because of injury and then saw himself "frozen out" of any chance to regain the title.  | 606: DEBATE |
"It's a fantastic feeling to be European champion after the year I've had," added Magee. Larsen's handlers were expecting their man to send Magee towards retirement. "I came back to the hotel and the champagne was on ice but it wasn't for me, it was for him," joked Magee. "Talk about putting a spanner in the works." Magee had hometown favourite Larsen down in the fifth and another two times in the sixth round. The fight was stopped early in the seventh round with the Dane again on the floor. Magee, a former IBO champion, shared a purse of £270,000 which was one of the highest ever for a European title bout.
