Mads Larsen goes down as Brian Magee wins the European title fight in Aarhus
Brian Magee won the vacant European super-middleweight title with a seventh-round stoppage of Mads Larsen in Aarhus on Saturday night. Belfast man Magee had hometown favourite Larsen down in the fifth and another two times in the sixth round. The fight was stopped early in the seventh round with the Dane again on the floor. Magee, a former IBO champion who gave up the British title in March because of injury, shared a purse of £270,000. | 606: DEBATE |
The Northern Ireland fighter emulated Derry's Charlie Nash by winning a European title in Denmark. Nash defeated Scottish great Ken Buchanan to land the European Boxing Union belt in Copenhagen 30 years ago. In his previous bout in December 2008, Magee landed the British title by knocking out Stevie McGuire in eight rounds. However, a shoulder injury forced him to vacate the British belt in March. He was then scheduled to challenge new British champion Tony Quigley in June but the bout had to be called off after the Liverpool fighter suffered an injury.
