New injury setback hits Doherty

Doherty scraped to a narrow points win over O'Connor
A broken hand has again put undefeated Pontypool welterweight Tony Doherty's promising career on hold.

The 23-year-old fractured his hand in a win over Ernie Smith in January, and a cut thumb ruled out a meeting with Kell Brook in Manchester last month.

Doherty returned strongly against Gary O'Connor in Newport on Saturday, his foe saved by the bell in the second.

But after the injury Doherty was forced onto the back foot and had to hang on for a 58-57 points victory.

The win takes Doherty's record to 19-0 (8 KOs), with one no-contest.
