Merrien will run for Great Britain at the European Championships in August |
Endurance runner Lee Merrien says Guernsey's athletics team will be able to hold their own at October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Merrien, who came fourth in the London Marathon in April, will be part of an eight-strong Guernsey athletics squad. He told BBC Guernsey: "We're taking our biggest team, and as a sport we're stronger than we've ever been. "We've certainly got our best squad since I've been going to the Games and this is my third time." Joining Merrien in Delhi are Dale Garland, Tom Druce, Matthew Bailey, Hywel Robinson, Nathan Stevens, Kylie Robilliard and Helen Hadjam. "The likes of Dale and Tom are both running really well at the minute and are in our squad for the 4x400m relay," added Merrien "I think that medal hopes are probably a little bit unrealistic, but we have every chance that if the guys go well we can make a final, and that will be a fantastic achievement."
